Last week, we paid our friends at Associated Barber College a visit and put together a little product demonstration for all of the students. Located in the heart of downtown San Diego, Associated Barber College has been around since 1927, and has a deep history in the barbering community.
We brought our good friend Mikal Zack from Lefty’s barbershop to teach the students the ins and outs of the Uppercut Deluxe products, and give the students some words of wisdom on what it takes to be a barber. Mikal is an alumni of Associated Barber College, so it was great for the students to get some advice from someone who was literally in their seat just under a decade ago.
After running through all of the products and performing a styling demonstration, we opened the floor for any questions that the students might have. The questions started out mainly focused around the products, but they quickly shifted into a whole series of questions about the trade of barbering. Mikal explained the different things that barbers need to do in order to be successful in their trade.
He talked about how being good at cutting hair is only half the battle and the real success of a barber comes from how he treats his clients. Treating everyone that walks through the door like they are a potential life-long client and giving them an experience rather than a service. It’s safe to say that everyone in the class room went away having learned some valuable information about being a barber.
We love when we get the chance to do events like these. It is one of the ways that we get to give back to the barbering community. Barbering is a timeless trade and it is the reason why we are here in the first place. Brands, trades and industries will come and go, but barbering will always be; because you can’t buy a haircut online.
